How to Pull Cable Through Conduit Faster (Without Losing Half Your Day)

Every electrician knows the feeling. You're on site, conduit's in, and you've got a 30-metre run to pull through. What should take 20 minutes turns into a 90-minute battle, cable snagging, fish tape kinking, and someone holding a torch at the other end swearing they can't see the tip.

It doesn't have to be this way.

Here's what actually makes the difference between a clean pull and a nightmare.

1. Get the Right Fish Tape for the Job

Not all fish tape is equal. The diameter matters more than most people realise.

A 6mm fish tape is the sweet spot for most residential and commercial conduit work. It's stiff enough to push through without kinking, but flexible enough to navigate bends without jamming. Thinner tapes kink and birdnest. Thicker tapes don't flex enough on tight radius bends.

Length matters too. A 30m tape handles the majority of single-run jobs. If you're doing longer runs or large commercial sites, a 50m tape saves you from ever being caught short.

2. Lube Is Not Optional

If you're dry-pulling, you're doing it hard. Cable lubricant, or even washing-up liquid in a pinch, reduces friction dramatically on longer runs. Apply it at the entry point and let it carry through.

For multi-cable pulls, it becomes even more critical. Every additional cable adds friction. Lube isn't cheating. It's just physics.

3. Stop Wrestling the Fish Tape by Hand

This is where most tradies lose time. Feeding a fish tape by hand is awkward, slow, and rough on your wrists, especially overhead or in tight spaces.

A proper cable feeder controls the feed rate and keeps the tape straight as it enters the conduit. You guide it. You don't fight it. The difference on a 30-metre run is significant, both in time and in how your arms feel at the end of the day.

It's the same reason you use a power drill instead of a screwdriver. The right tool for the job.

4. Pre-plan Your Bends

Every 90-degree bend adds resistance. On a run with four bends, you might as well be pulling uphill. Where you can, use long-radius bends instead of tight 90s. On existing conduit, check the bend count before you start, if it's over four, consider whether you need a pull point.

A few minutes of planning saves significant effort on the pull.

5. Use a Swivel on Your Pull Line

Once your fish tape is through and you're attaching the cable, use a swivel connector between the tape and your pull line. Without it, your cable can twist under tension, particularly on long runs with bends. A twisted cable is harder to pull, more likely to snag, and puts stress on the insulation.

Small detail. Big difference.

6. Two People vs One — Know When Each Makes Sense

Two-person pulls are the default for good reason. One feeds, one pulls. Communication is key, steady tension, no jerking.

But on a clean, straight, well-lubed run with a decent feeder tool, one experienced sparky can handle a lot more alone than most people expect. The feeder controls the cable entry, which is usually where the second person was standing anyway.

The Bottom Line

Faster cable pulls come down to three things: the right fish tape, proper lubrication, and controlling your feed. Get those right and you'll cut your pull times significantly, on almost every run.
